so long, august

Oh, I love when I begin a book I absolutely love from the very first page:
Looking outside the massive sky. Thinking air staffs need to set a special time-zone for long-distance airplanes, or passengers like me very confusing about time. When a body floating in air, which country she belong to?
--from A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers, by Xiaolu Guo (2007)

The best part about starting it today is that I have the day off tomorrow and I think, just maybe, I´ll finish it then. Tomorrow is off because of Labor Day, my favorite American holiday.

Hope you´re all safe and sound and so-so happy.

ubuntu, rusted root, & what am i doing with my life?

napkin, table, margarita

That there photo is 16 % margarita on-the-rocks, just one of many I enjoyed while the family was in town. Many reasons why I haven´t been blogging. Real life; it looks like this:
  • D. Sergei is sick. He´s on antibiotics for a bladder infection and I feel so bad for him. My little fighter jet.
  • I suck at computer terminology, but I am no longer using Windows as my operating system. Steve tricked me out with Ubuntu, a Linux kernel (???). Anyway, it is very similar to Windows, but I´m still getting used to it. Read: I don´t know much, but I know I love Steve. The Ubuntu start-up jingle reminds Steve of his *favorite* album his senior year of high school. I laughed so hard when I saw this video. The 90s were so dorky. Dude!
  • TS Fay, the other coming storms...urgh. I have a little anxiety about this weather.
  • Work. WTF! Librarianship should be boring, not stressful.
  • Reading! It is consuming me during the night times. Really, how I unwind.
  • Tomorrow, I plan to bang out that camera & snap away, away, away.

like i said, almost never daily

When a vacation wraps I come back to my blog because, well, I don´t know. I´m really home I suppose, even though I didn´t leave home. I´ve been posting extremely light here, taking few photos, pausing from my great reading streak; all of this begs an ack! What seems to be working for me right now are the following things:
  • having found loads of things to photograph; specifically, scores found from my recent lucky streak at the local thrifts
  • Google Reader; old news but good news: I´ve carved an addicting niche for myself
  • the beach, especially when the sun is covered by clouds or the surf is being tossed around by tropical storms
  • having cats that squint and dogs that wag their tails when I say their names in funny voices
So, there´s plenty more to share but I´ll save that for another time, folks.

vacationing

...the family is in town, and we are spending the better part of our days thrifting, walking on the beach, and eating scrumptious meals prepared by mom & crew.

More soon.

should publish this tomorrow, but for now:

I just scanned my blog's latest posts and went *snore*. Something isn't gelling like Magellan.

It's not even today but tomorrow that the calendar is one big stream of eights. I remember when I was eight and it was August 8, 1988. It was hot and I was feeling lazy and watching the local 5 o'clock news with my parents. I was sprawled out on the carpet in front of the TV, drifting in and out of a nap (then, like now, the heat just zaps me), when in the last moments of the news broadcast, there was time for one more story. I remember footage of a party on a river, tire swings, people with painted faces squealing as they jumped into the current. They were celebrating 8/8/88. And my brain did this thing where, in conjunction with all my senses, it made a time capsule of the memory. I was hit with shock recently when I realized this memory is now twenty years old - twenty how can it be! But, I'm looking forward to tomorrow. 08/08/08, me at 28.

it is fun. but, it is all that comes to mind when i sit down to blog.
in case you wanted to know, jane is the loudest, cole has the lowest voice, dean is our redneck babbler, and d. sergei has a russian accent that would bring you to your knees.

dork alert!

so busy

Wow. This was taken a year and a half ago - proving the line between cool and dork is a thin one.
