i believe in second chances

In 2003, I tried reading Jeffrey Eugenide's Middlesex. After a few pages, I thought the book wasn't for me - I didn't understand, to be honest, what I was reading. Chromosomes what-what? Something about Greece? My heart + head just weren't into it, and that saddened me, because I really loved The Virgin Suicides. Then Middlesex won the Pulitzer. I put that on a mental Post-It, and filed it away under "try, try again someday."

So I recently gave it another go, and loved the first few pages. Then the holidays happened and I was leaving reading to airplane rides - but the combination of Dramamine and reading on a plane is like...tiring. So again, I didn't make it very far. I slept away precious hours of reading time on my flights. And drooled, to boot. And woke up with pretzel breath, which is the grossest kind of all the bad breaths combined. But I digress.

Fast forward to last night, which was chilly - perfect reading weather - and I picked up Middlesex again.

This book is unputdownable! In other words but the same: I cannot put it down! I love when I read two really good books back to back. And to think, I might have skipped on this one completely.

I give second chances to books! I do. So someday, I plan on revisiting The Time Traveler's Wife. I sincerely do.

Until the time comes where you decide to give TTW another try I will keep my eyes peeled for an audio version, perhaps you will prefer it.

I tried to listen to Middlesex. It was horrible. I felt like I was metally challenged or something. I haven't tried again. I thought I might try reading it.

it's funny how sometimes books depend on your frame of mind. like art.

right now i'm kind of into fluffier novels. like... reading 'devil in the details' instead of 'the island of the day before.'
