Here's the list and some of my considerate opinions (for the list with pictures and rebuttals, click here):
- American Beauty (1999) I so wanted to love this movie. But I did not. My friend wanted to see it twice, but I couldn't. I faked a sore throat to get out of it. It turns out I don't empathize well with suburban life.
- Chicago (2002) I can see why this would be overrated to some, but truthfully, I liked it (save Renee).
- Clerks (1994) Agreed! I am so not a fan of Kevin Smith...you can have him. Please. Take him into your house and keep him in the basement. Do not let him leave.
- Fantasia (1940) I want to say this was re-released in theaters when I was a young girl (Yes? No?) and there was so much hype surrounding it that I think my Disney-infatuated friend of the time had to go see it. This is all I remember: it sucked.
- Field of Dreams (1989) Awww. I heart this movie. It reminds me of home. So not overrated.
- Chariots of Fire (1981) Bletch! This movie is lame.
- Good Will Hunting (1997) What? This is the only Robin Williams movie I can tolerate. Not overrated!
- Forrest Gump (1994) I LOATHE THIS FILM.
- Jules and Jim (1962) Haven't seen this.
- A Beautiful Mind (2001) I haven't seen this one either, but that's because it stars Russell Crowe, and I just can't stand him.
- Monster's Ball (2001) Overrated! I gave this movie 40 minutes and checked out.
- Moonstruck (1987) Again, overrated! This is my problem. When people say, "this is so funny, you are going to love it!" I never do. When I know I am supposed to laugh at a certain time, I can't. It makes me look so bitter.
- Mystic River (2003) So overrated. I still want those hours of my life back. And I slept through one of them.
- Nashville (1975) Haven't see this.
- The Wizard of Oz (1939) No way! Love this movie.
- An American in Paris (1951) Haven't see this.
- Easy Rider (1969) Haven't see this.
- The Red Shoes (1948) Haven't see this.
- 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) Overrated. I was so disappointed in this movie!
- Gone With the Wind (1939) Haven't see this (but the book was not my cup of tea).

i know what you mean -- anthony's turned me into a film snob. i won't ever see, for instance, "click."
or whatever the hell that adam sandler movie was.
some comments:
chicago - didn't really like this one. maybe it was gerbil-man.
fantasia - awww... i heart fantasia! i actually have the music cd. it was the beginning of a lifelong love of unicorns and pegasus. pegasi. pegassii.
good will hunting - i fucking hate ben & matt.
mystic river - the previews looked lame. i'm highly skeptical of any and all clint eastwood films.
wizard of oz - totally awesome! though it gives me the heebie jeebies when i think about people hanging themselves behind the set..
Totally agree. They all suck. Although the one you haven't seen is probably the most worth watching out of all the bunch...if you can stand to see past the Russell. I understand. I hate all movies with DiCaprio. Just can't stand the guy.
Aha! Something about which we are totally opposite! I'm a film lover. I have very low standards and am easily entertained. There are few movies that I turn off before finishing. There are advantages and disadvantages to this--I mean, I'm almost never disappointed that I watched a movie, but it also means that to most people, I have horrible taste in movies. :)
Re: Forrest Gump. I admit I love this movie. But have you (or anyone else) read the book? I don't even know HOW they got the screenplay from the book. They are so totally different it's not even funny. I mean, Gump at one point is a freakin astronaut. Ridiculous.
I am a movie lover. I love all movies. In fact, I loved American Beauty. I agree with some of the movies on the list. I have to say that A Beautiful Mind is a good movies. I hate Russel Crow, but it was ok 'cause he was total bat shit crazy. I heart Jennifer Connely. Ever since I was a little girl and my favorite movie was Labrynth. I love Gone With the Wind. It is fabulous.
You made me laugh! They forgot Snakes on a plane-I know,I know! lots of people really liked it. My husband and his friend dragged me to this movie and I wish I could go back in time to that moment and have a root canal instead. I learned how to flirt by watching Gone With the Wind-it was my grandma's idea, what can I say....I loved the Wizard of Oz but still have nightmares about about the flying monkeys-left over from when I was little.heehee
I read the Forrest Gump book, but I thought it was written after the movie (insert ellipses here)
Looking at all those movies makes me tired
more tired
Hubby and I fucking hated Mystic River and were baffled by everyone shitting their pants over it.
I wish I just had avoided it the same way I avoided The English Patient. So rarely do movies live up to their hype.
You know what movie did, though? Brokeback Mountain. I finally saw it a couple of weeks ago and wept like a baby for hours. Fucking A.
Anyone who says that "Field of Dreams" is overrated doesn't have a soul.
And I hate to admit it, but I kinda have come to like "Forrest Gump". I HATED IT, when it first came out. Then I merely hated it.
Now I kinda like it. Weird, huh?
LOVE Field of Dreams.
LOVE Fantasia. I think you have to be raised on classical music to love it. Maybe? And the more I watch it, the more endearing the animation is. The mushrooms! THE MUSHROOMS!!!
Also... The English Patient? LOVE.
