Duck Motif

Do you ever find yourself among the worst company on an intercontinental flight? Company so bad you can't even bring yourself to talk about it? I had one of those experiences recently, but it was on that same flight that I also had an eureka moment about this blog. Instead of focusing on the bad, I'd rather focus on the eureka moment: the direction I want to take this blog!

These are some thoughts I gathered:

I work at a prep school, and in honor of that, I thought it would be appropriate to make this blog a dedication to one of my most favorite pop-culture inspirations: The Official Preppy Handbook, by Lisa Birnbach. In 1980, Birnbach published this amazing parody of all things Lilly Pulitzer, Harvard, and well, duck motif. I'd heard of the OPH referenced in various publications, and when I stumbled on a mint-condition copy at a thrift store (dedicated inside to someone with my namesake - priceless) for $1.00, my blue-collar world was forever changed. My prep school job is very menial, but I interact with this generation's navy blazer-wearing preps. Because it is summer right now, I have very little to report. But in a month or so, I start back to work, and will most definitely have some preppy experiences to record in my blog. Until then, I'll keep things very working-man, very pro-labor, and very local-tavern.

It's summer!!! I'm in my hometown: Portland, OR, on a nearly three-week vacation. I'm avoiding categorized hurricanes, extreme temps, and bugs. Life is good! I scribbled out a little agenda for myself to follow while I'm here (unfortunately, if I don't, I end up reading and hanging out with my mom way too much). Tonight, I went to a Portland Beavers baseball game, drank, and hung out with my sister and her friends. It was so silly, mostly because the team mascot came up to my sister and rubbed himself all over her. I assume it was a he? Anyway, it was a good time.

Adieu, and...always, there's more to come.
